Grateful Dead : Scarlet Begonias : Live at the Capitol Theater, Passaic, NJ, April 27th, 1977

This video occupies a place of prominence in our collection.  We love especially Phil’s interpretation of the tabla on his bass guitar.  One of our top five Dead songs, Scarlet has been known to induce rapid facemelt, especially at the tail end when it bleeds into Fire on the Mountain.  1977 stands as one of the Dead’s most prolific periods for live performances.  Detractors lament the screeching intrusion of Donna Jean Godchaux’s vocals on many of the jams, but most recognize that the 1977 run captured lightning in a bottle.  This concert was simulcast in New York City on WNEW, which must have been a treat for those cruising the dial that evening.  We remember simulcast concerts.  We remember holding our cassette player up to the radio speaker to tape shows.  Those tapes no longer exist, sadly.
